Casa António Sérgio

Casa António Sérgio in Lisbon unites architectural heritage, intellectual memory and continuing public purpose. Designed by Raul Lino in 1925, the house was the home of António Sérgio (1883-1969), one of twentieth-century Portugal's most influential thinkers on education, democracy, citizenship and cooperation. Today it functions as a documentation and knowledge centre under CASES - Cooperativa António Sérgio para a Economia Social.

Its holdings include Sérgio's personal library and documentary estate, collections associated with other cooperators, records linked to the former INSCOOP and a specialist social-economy library. Digitisation and public consultation extend the value of the physical collections well beyond the house itself. The site's importance is therefore not simply biographical: a domestic setting in which ideas on cooperation and democratic participation were developed has become an institutional space where those ideas remain available for research, education and contemporary debate.

The house is also protected as a building of public interest, giving the site a dual safeguarding obligation: architectural conservation and preservation of an intellectual estate. Its continuing use for meetings, documentation and study is consistent with Sergio's conviction that democracy required education and the formation of citizens capable of participation. The peace connection should therefore be expressed carefully but clearly.

Casa Antonio Sergio is not a peace monument; rather, it preserves a tradition in which cooperation, education and democratic citizenship were understood as alternatives to authoritarian or exclusionary social relations. By keeping those ideas available for public study and debate, the house contributes to the cultural conditions of peaceful democratic life: informed participation, pluralism, solidarity and the capacity to pursue social change through institutions rather than coercion.
